COMMUNITY SHARED SERVICES (CSS) is a Management Service Organization led by Northwood Neighbourhood Services (NNS) in collaboration with founding members Elspeth Heyworth Centre for Women (EHCW), Jane Alliance Neighbourhood Services, and the Somali Immigrant Aid Organization (SIAO).
The need for this project arose from the imperative to create operational and programmatic synergies and efficiencies by reducing administrative costs and burden, and avoiding duplication and gaps in service delivery. This is particularly important in today’s context of dwindling financial resources, funding cuts and the resulting impact on community organizations that provide much needed services to vulnerable communities.
Funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the project is in Phase Two of three, over three years. The first phase involved the design of a freestanding and jointly held entity referred to as Management Services Organization (MSO); the second phase is the implementation of the programmatic aspect of the project, involving the establishment of three administrative functions provided by expert, user-friendly vendors in cost-effective ways, as well as United Way-funded research around constellation business models in non-profits; and the third phase will focus on ensuring the operationalization of the MSO and the constellations, if that research proves positive.
As an innovative project, CSS will support the capacity of the current and future member organizations in the GTA so that they may collaborate in sustainable and creative ways to respond to the needs of the communities that they serve more effectively.
